The Panthers went from pathetic to competitive under Bossenmeyer. Orange had gone 16-50 in the three previous seasons before he arrived. Last year was the first winning season since 1987. “It was important for us to have a good year,” Bossenmeyer said. “The kids got confidence in themselves. Now we have to keep building on it.” To do that, the Panthers will need a big season from several players. Worthem averaged 15.4 points a year ago and can be counted on to produce similar numbers. However, they must replace guard Carlos Duran (18.5 ppg), the league’s co-most valuable player. Nguyen and Fahrner will have to pick up the scoring slack. “We’ll need a lot of people to chip in offensively to replace Carlos,” Bossenmeyer. The Panthers’ glaring weakness is inside. Worthem was the team’s leading rebounder last season, but at 6-2, he is sometimes overmatched. Demps, a transfer from Pullman, Wash., should help. “We were really hurt on the glass during the summer,” Bossenmeyer said. On bright side, the Panthers are extremely quick and will use that to offset their size disadvantage. “We are the smallest team in the league, but we’re also the fastest,” Bossenmeyer said. “We’re going to pressure people and try to make the teams play our style.”
