COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Kentucky Reaches Long-Range Goal, 76-74

Jamal Mashburn scored 21 points and Deron Feldhaus added 19 Saturday as No. 14 Kentucky took command with long-range shooting, then held off ninth-ranked Indiana’s second-half rally for a 76-74 victory at Indianapolis.

Kentucky made 11 three-point shots while Indiana did not make any. But the Hoosiers outshot Kentucky, 30-9, at the free-throw line and nearly made up a 10-point deficit in the final 4:30 at the Hoosier Dome.

Kentucky’s victory wasn’t assured until Indiana’s Greg Graham missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.

Kentucky made 11 of 23 three-point shots, more than offsetting Indiana’s 21-point advantage from the free-throw line.

“We concentrated the whole game on not giving Indiana a three,” Kentucky Coach Rick Pitino said. “We felt if we could do that, even if we did foul too much, no matter what else they did, if we could make our threes, we’d have a chance to win.”

Kentucky led, 74-64, with 4:30 left before a basket by Graham started a 10-2 spurt by the Hoosiers. Two free throws by Graham brought the Hoosiers within two points with less than a minute left, but Graham missed from three-point range as time ran out.

No. 1 Duke 96, Canisius 60--Christian Laettner scored 19 points in his homecoming at Buffalo, N.Y.

Laettner, who grew up in suburban Angola and attended a private high school in Buffalo, made two of five shots in the first half before finding the range.

Thomas Hill scored 26 points and Grant Hill added 16 for Duke (4-0).

No. 4 Ohio St. 84, Oregon State 56--The Buckeyes took a 13-0 lead at Columbus, Ohio, and were never threatened by the Beavers, who were playing their fifth consecutive road game.

Jim Jackson scored 24 points for Ohio State, which forced 27 turnovers.

Twice in the game, Jackson went on 7-0 runs and scored all of Ohio State’s points while Oregon State went scoreless.

No. 5 North Carolina 101, Central Florida 72--George Lynch had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina (6-0) led, 59-37, at halftime and then outscored the Running Knights, 28-9, to start the second half. North Carolina’s largest lead was 43 points, 91-48, with 9:08 left.

The last time North Carolina opened the season 6-0 was 1985-86, when it won its first 21 games.

No. 6 Seton Hall 88, Iona 72--Seton Hall’s Jerry Walker made all 10 of his shots, scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Pirates at East Rutherford, N.J.

Seton Hall (3-1), was coming off an 83-54 loss to North Carolina, its worst home defeat since 1974.

No. 8 Oklahoma State 76, California 62--Corey Williams and Randy Davis each scored 14 points for Oklahoma State as the Cowboys held off the Golden Bears at Tulsa, Okla.

Oklahoma State went ahead, 58-39, with 9:17 left after Darwyn Alexander made a three-point shot. But Cal capitalized on three three-point baskets during a 15-6 run to make the score 66-56.

Oklahoma State made eight free throws to take a 74-59 lead with a minute left.

Missouri 87, No. 11 Arkansas 76--Anthony Peeler scored 32 points, including nine down the stretch, to give the Tigers (4-0) the upset at Fayetteville, Ark.

Lee Mayberry, who scored 19 points, gave Arkansas (4-2) its last lead at 60-59, but the Tigers outscored the Razorbacks, 19-9, during the next 10 minutes.

No. 12 Connecticut 85, Maine 71--Chris Smith scored 27 points as the Huskies overcame a sloppy start for the victory at Storrs, Conn.

The Huskies (4-0) opened the second half with a 15-8 run to take control over Maine (3-3), playing its sixth consecutive road game.

Scott Burrell added 17 for Connecticut.

No. 13 Utah 84, Alaska Fairbanks 57--Byron Wilson scored 20 points and Phil Dixon added 14 as the Utes cruised to victory at Salt Lake City.

Wilson scored nine of his points in a first-half stretch in which Utah (6-0) outscored the Division II Nanooks, 23-4, to take a 47-26 lead with 3:06 left before intermission.

North Carolina Charlotte 79, No. 15 Alabama 74--Henry Williams and James Terrell each scored 20 points as the 49ers won the Tournament of Champions at Charlotte, N.C., with their second consecutive upset.

UNCC (4-1), which had not beaten a ranked team since 1977, had reached the championship game by beating 20th-ranked and previously unbeaten DePaul.

No. 17 Georgia Tech 97, Tennessee Chattanooga 84--Matt Geiger scored 23 points and four other Yellow Jackets scored in double figures to lead Georgia Tech at Atlanta.

Jon Barry, who scored 18 points and had 12 assists, converted a four-point play at the buzzer to give Georgia Tech a 51-39 halftime lead.

No. 19 Oklahoma 97, Coppin State 70--Damon Patterson scored 27 points, five during an 18-2 run that broke the game open for the Sooners at Norman, Okla.

The score was 43-43 at halftime, but Brent Price, who finished with 23 points, also had five in the run as Oklahoma built a 63-49 lead with 13:51 left.

North Carolina State 97, No. 20 DePaul 83--Tom Gugliotta scored 27 points to lead the Wolfpack (4-1) over the Blue Demons in the consolation round of the Tournament of Champions at Charlotte, N.C.

DePaul (3-2), which lost to North Carolina Charlotte Friday night, made 39% of its shots against the Wolfpack.

No. 21 Iowa 84, Louisiana Tech 65--James Moses scored 24 points and Acie Earl added 21 points and had eight blocked shots as the Hawkeyes won the Hawkeye Classic at Iowa City.

Iowa (5-0) won the title for the ninth time in 10 years and gave coach Tom Davis his 115th victory in Iowa City to move him to No. 3 in career victories behind Lute Olson (168 wins) and Rollie Williams (146).

No. 22 Michigan State 83, Dayton 74--The Spartans held Dayton to two points in the final four minutes and broke away for the victory at Dayton, Ohio.

Mike Peplowski scored 21 points for Michigan State (5-0).

No. 23 Wake Forest 66, Fairleigh Dickinson 43--Sophomore forward Rodney Rogers scored 23 points and led a 16-5 second-half run that carried the Demon Deacons to victory at Teaneck, N.J.

Derrick McQueen had 11 points and Marc Blucas nine as Wake Forest (4-1) turned a 25-20 game into a rout in the second half.

Rutgers 91, No. 24 Nevada Las Vegas 85--With Rutgers leading, 87-85, the Rebels’ Reggie Manuel missed a layup with 19 seconds left in overtime, allowing the Scarlet Knights to gain the upset at Piscataway, N.J.

Mark Redden made two free throws with 12 seconds left and Charlie Weiler made two more with four seconds left to preserve the victory for Rutgers (3-0).

No. 25 Michigan 80, Cleveland State 61--Freshman Jalen Rose scored eight points of his 17 points during an 11-0 run in the second half for the Wolverines at Cleveland State’s new $55-million Convocation Centre.

Michigan (2-0) led by six at halftime and built its lead to 57-43 with seven minutes left.
