Carlton Fisk agreed to return to the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs are ready to let Rick Sutcliffe go rather than offer him arbitration.
The White Sox had declined to exercise Fisk’s option at $2,305,000, his 1991 salary, but they signed him to a one-year deal for $1 million guaranteed and $1.15 million in bonuses based on games available, starts and attendance.
In other moves, Dwight Evans agreed on a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Baltimore Orioles, and outfielder Brian Downing and Texas agreed to a one-year deal for a guaranteed $800,000.
The St. Louis Cardinals offered arbitration to first baseman Pedro Guerrero, the New York Mets to Frank Viola and Daryl Boston, the Cincinnati Reds to second baseman Mariano Duncan and the Oakland Athletics offered it to right-hander Ron Darling.
In all, 29 free agents were offered arbitration and 45 were not.
