Share

San Clemente High School will hold a special seminar dealing with racial tension and cultural diversity on Wednesday.

The seminar, called “Inter-Ethnic Relationships and Cultural Diversity,” is the first in a new series of seminars that will be held on campus throughout the school year, said James T. Walshe, assistant principal.

Future seminars will deal with AIDS, teen-age drug abuse and communication between parents and their children.

“These are topics that we feel are relevant to things that are going on these days with students and the community,” Walshe said. “We felt a seminar on cultural diversity would be an ideal topic to start with.”

The cultural diversity seminar will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Little Theater at the high school, located at 700 Avenida Pico.

It will be hosted by school psychologist Loren O’Connor and counselor Sally Okumura-Clanin.

“We want to be able to reach a lot of people,” Okumura-Clanin said. “It’ll be like a ‘Geraldo’ show where people can make comments, ask questions and share their own experiences. We’ll have a student panel of all ethnic backgrounds. We want to target everyone.”

Part of the seminar will be presented in Spanish. It is free and open to students, parents and members of the community.
