VENTURA : Quake Code Change Gets Tentative OK
The Ventura City Council tentatively added earthquake-proofing requirements to the city building code Monday, placing new restrictions on old unreinforced masonry buildings.
The council voted 5 to 2 to give initial approval to the code change, which requires floors and walls to be strengthened when the buildings are converted from one use to another. Jack Tingstrom and Jim Monahan dissented.
The change affects 138 unreinforced masonry buildings along Main Street and Thompson Boulevard if they change use between now and 1993, when a state building code with the same requirements is scheduled to take effect. The council also gave final approval to another measure requiring landlords to anchor brick parapets and tile roofs and to coat large windows with shatterproof glazing.
