DAKAR : AIDS Impact in Africa

Share

Up to 1,000 officials and experts on AIDS are to convene in the Senegalese capital next Monday for the Sixth International Conference on AIDS in Africa. The session will focus on the social and economic impact of the syndrome in a region where demographic changes stemming from AIDS may already be visible.

The conference, which is sponsored by the United Nations’ World Health Organization but organized by a West African group, will include papers on the effect of AIDS on economic development in the Third World. There will also be presentations on the impact of AIDS on women, children and religion. A special study will focus on the care of children orphaned by the scourge.

Attendees will no doubt also compare notes on the precarious status of the continent’s national AIDS programs, most of which are underfunded and overwhelmed by the scale of the problem.
