UCLA’s Defense of Volleyball Title Continues Tonight

The defending NCAA champion UCLA women’s volleyball team will meet No. 8 New Mexico (23-5) in a semifinal match of the NCAA West Regional tournament tonight at 8 at Stanford.

In tonight’s other semifinal match at 6, No. 14 USC (23-7) will play No. 1 Stanford (29-1). The final will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The NCAA championships will be Dec. 19 and 21 at UCLA.

The Bruins (27-5), who have won three consecutive West Regional titles, defeated No. 15 Pepperdine in three games in the first round of the NCAA playoffs.

UCLA’s Annett Buckner was named the Pacific 10 Conference freshman of the year, and teammates Natalie Williams and Elaine Youngs made the all-conference team.

The UCLA women’s basketball team (2-1) will play Saturday at Texas Christian (3-1) and Monday at James Madison.

The Bruins are coming off a 78-70 loss to UC Santa Barbara. Rehema Stephens, who had 16 points, led four UCLA players who scored in double figures. Stephens is averaging 19.3 points and 8.3 rebounds, and Lynn Kamrath is averaging 11 points and 10.7 rebounds.

The Pepperdine women’s basketball team (3-1) will play at Cal State Fullerton (3-1) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Aimee McDaniel and Linda Waters each scored 13 points to lead Pepperdine to a 77-55 victory over Cal State Northridge last week.

Guard Missy Ayotte, a transfer from Duke, will become eligible for Saturday’s game.

Ten players from the Santa Monica College football team, which won the Western State Conference Southern Division championship, were named to the all-division team.

The Corsairs (8-3) edged San Bernardino Valley, 32-31, on Saturday in the Western State Conference Bowl.

Corsairs selected to the first-team were offensive lineman Chris Taylor, wide receiver Greg Hooks, quarterback Dion Bergeron, kick returner Tim Holliday, defensive lineman Pat McIntyre, linebackers Tony Gray and Kareeb Harbin, defensive backs Keith Hawkins and Derrick Stewart, and punter Andy Dawson.

First-team selections from West Los Angeles College were defensive lineman Richard Bell and wide receiver Ronald Peebles.

Santa Monica players on the second team were center Nigel Mills, offensive lineman Carter Howell, wide receivers Isaac Bruce and Jason Lucky, defensive lineman Paul Hatter, linebacker Darren Johnson and running back Johnny Mack.

Second-team selections from West Los Angeles were offensive lineman Ronald Lewis and running back Kevin Hicks.

Six Westside residents scored holes in one at Los Angeles municipal golf courses, according to a newsletter from the courses.

The aces were by Brett Heasley of West Los Angeles at Hansen Dam, David Pastor of West Los Angeles at Encino, Tim Vorkink of Santa Monica at Penmar and Richard Diamond, Michael Kanter and Caroline Wilson of West Los Angeles at the Rancho Park nine-hole course.
