Three of the dozen finalists statewide in the running for the student member position on the state Board of Education come from one school in the Santa Ana Unified School District, a district spokeswoman said.

The students, all 16-year-old juniors from Saddleback High School, are Regina Hoang, Nhu Lee and Tam Thanh Nguyen, district spokeswoman Diane Thomas said. They will represent Orange County at the California School Boards Assn. conference in San Francisco today and Saturday, where they will deliver speeches to be judged by an audience of student members of California school boards.

The race for the student seat started with 209 applicants statewide. From the pool of 12 finalists, six will be chosen for interviews with the Board of Education. The board will pare the list to three, and Gov. Pete Wilson will choose from among them. Thomas said the appointment should be announced by February.
