COUNTYWIDE : Tree Recycling Planned Again
To cut down on trash at local landfills, Ventura County will again operate its Christmas tree recycling program.
The program, which began last year, provides curbside collection or drop-off sites for Yule trees after the holidays. The trees are ground into wood chips for landscaping and other uses.
The program, called the Ventura Countywide Recycling Consortium, is a joint effort by city and county recycling coordinators, waste haulers, landfill operators, local businesses and volunteers.
Last year’s effort collected nearly 50,000 trees--more than half the 90,000 trees tossed out by county residents after the holidays, officials said. The campaign diverted about 435 tons of material from local landfills by recycling them into wood chips.
Free wood chips will be available to the public Jan. 20 through Feb. 2 at the Ojai Anti-Litter Station on Old Baldwin Road, off California 150; Agromin Horticultural Soils, 1501 S. Las Posas Road, Camarillo; and The Worm Concern, 1450 Tierra Rejada Road, Simi Valley.
