A 2-year-old La Puente boy was killed Sunday after he was run over by an ice cream van that fled after the incident in front of the toddler’s home, authorities said.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said Michael Angel Serrato was pronounced dead on arrival at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina after the 1:10 p.m. incident in the 14200 block of Beckner Avenue.

Sheriff’s spokesman Sam Conrad said the toddler was playing with two sisters in the front yard when the girls, ages 5 and 11, decided to buy ice cream from a late 1970s van that stopped in front of the residence.

After buying the ice cream, the girls returned to the front yard and found their brother missing.

“When one . . . looked back at the ice cream van, she saw her brother laying underneath the vehicle,” Conrad said.

The van’s driver drove off, he said.

Conrad said the boy had apparently run into the street and was run over by the van, which authorities believe was traveling very slowly at the time of impact.

Witnesses said the van was red, with a white dome top and the words family wagon painted on its rear doors. It had been selling ice cream in the area for some time, deputies said.

Anyone with information about the van or its driver is asked to call the sheriff’s station in the City of Industry at (818) 330-3322.
