Judge Delays Sentencing for ‘Cotton Club’ Figure
After lengthy arguments, a last-minute glitch Monday halted the sentencing of “Cotton Club” figure Karen “Laynie” Greenberger in the 1983 murder of theatrical producer Roy Radin.
Superior Court Judge Curtis Rappe said he wanted more time to consider whether he has to abide by the jury’s conviction of Greenberger on kidnaping and second-degree murder counts as he decides on a sentence.
Radin was slain after he left his hotel with Greenberger en route to a dinner engagement at a swanky Beverly Hills restaurant, authorities said. He never arrived.
Prosecutors maintained that Greenberger ordered his killing because he was trying to cut her out of a deal with movie producer Robert Evans to finance the movie “The Cotton Club.”
The defense contended that Radin was killed because of a soured cocaine deal involving someone other than Greenberger.
