AT&T; Stops Offering Telegraphs: American Telephone & Telegraph Co. said it has stopped offering telegraph service because of low demand for the low-tech communication--but it has no plans to change its name. “It is an historic name and our legacy,” said Wes Bartlett, district manager of business communications services. Telegraph service, which sends messages over wires in dots and dashes, remained popular until the 1970s, in part because it provided a written record, AT&T; said. But faxes, computerized electronic mail and digital data transmission have dealt telegraph service a knockout punch in recent years.
