Pacific’s Summer Lineup

The Pacific Symphony has announced its fifth summer series at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, to begin July 4.

Guest conductors for the five concerts will include Jack Everly, principal conductor with American Ballet Theatre, July 4; Enrique Diemecke, music director of the National Orchestra of Mexico, July 25, and Zuohuang Chen, principal conductor of the Central Philharmonic of Beijing and music director of the Wichita Symphony, Sept. 26. Pacific music director Carl St. Clair will conduct Aug. 15 and Sept. 5.

Soloists will include soprano La Juan Carter and narrator Thurl Ravenscroft, July 4; pianist Noriko Ogawa, July 25; baritone Robin Buck, Aug. 15; duo-pianists Ralph Markham and Kenneth Broadway, Sept. 5, and violinist Mark Kaplan, Sept. 26. All concerts will begin at 8 p.m. Picnic grounds will open at 6 p.m. Fireworks will be featured at the first and last concerts.

* July 4: “Spirit of America”: works by Copland, Gershwin, Irving Berlin and others. Everly, conductor; Carter, soprano; Ravenscroft, narrator.

July 25: “Beethoven-Fest”: Overture to “Fidelio,” Symphony No. 2, Piano Concerto No. 5. Diemecke, conductor; Ogawa, piano.

* Aug. 15: “Carmina Burana”: Works by Copland and Orff. St. Clair, conductor; Buck, baritone; Beverly Hoch, soprano; Frank Kelley, tenor. With Pacific Chorale.

* Sept. 5: “Mozart-in-the-Meadows”: Overture to “Le Nozze di Figaro,” Concerto for Two Pianos, K. 365, Symphony No. 40. St. Clair, conductor; Markham and Broadway, duo-pianos.

* Sept. 26: “Tchaikovsky Spectacular”: Cossack Dance from “Mazeppa,” “Romeo and Juliet” Fantasy-Overture, Violin Concerto, Suite for Orchestra No. 3, “1812” Overture. Chen, conductor; Kaplan, violin.
