El Monte : Christmas Tree Pickup
The city will conduct a free Christmas tree disposal program at a supermarket and a park on two consecutive Saturdays.
Trees will be collected Dec. 28 and Jan. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Vons supermarket, 9900 Garvey Ave., and at Lambert Park on El Rovia Avenue between McGirk Avenue and Emery Street.
Assistant City Administrator Matthew D. Weintraub said a second Vons was unable to participate because of extreme traffic congestion during the holidays.
The trees will be rendered into mulch as cover for local landfills. All ornaments must be removed from the trees, especially tinsel, which is harmful to the mulching equipment, Weintraub said. Trees with flocking will be accepted, although Weintraub encouraged removal of the material before recycling.
