ORANGE : Additional Funds Approved for Bridge

The City Council last week approved an additional $215,000 for improvements on the Main Street bridge of the Garden Grove Freeway.

About $500,000 had previously been allocated to widen the bridge, a project of the Transportation System Improvement Authority, a joint-powers authority of the cities of Orange and Santa Ana. The project will also receive $247,140 from the Orange County Transportation Authority.

City officials discovered the need for additional funds when construction bids exceeded a consultant’s estimate of $581,000 by 27%. The total cost of construction is expected to be $962,140.

Nearly 30 contractors were invited to bid on construction, but only two bids were returned, city officials said. The project will go to the lowest bidder, Griffith Co. of Santa Fe Springs, which bid $740,264.

The project will widen the bridge by 18 feet, adding a southbound lane and a sidewalk on the west side.
