A 33-year-old man who was fatally wounded in a gang-related shooting outside a Pasadena neighborhood market was apparently an innocent bystander, investigators said Thursday.

Johnny Juan Perez of Pasadena was shot in the leg and upper torso Wednesday night while standing with five other people near the Zahida Market at 1860 Summit Ave., Pasadena Police Lt. Van Anthony said.

Perez died at a nearby hospital. A 16-year-old boy was also grazed on the leg by a ricocheting bullet.

Anthony said that two youths in their late teens had walked past the store and shouted gang slogans before one of them opened fire with a handgun. He said that Perez was not associated with gangs, but a rival gang member was among the group he was with.
