VENTURA : Foundation Offers ‘Surfer’s Ear Clinic’

Share

The Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit coastal ecology group, is sponsoring a free “surfer’s ear clinic” this weekend at Surfer’s Point in Ventura to evaluate anyone who might suffer from excessive bone growth in the ear canal.

Medical authorities believe that surfer’s ear, also known as bony exostoses, is caused by cold wind and water irritating the ear canal. The resulting lumps of bone that form under the skin can lead to ear infections, ringing in the ears and even hearing loss.

Surgery is sometimes required to restore hearing or correct other medical problems.

The Surfrider Foundation will check ears for possible bone growth and offer tips on how to protect against the bone growth by wearing a neoprene hood and ear plugs and drying the ear canal with drops of an alcohol-boric acid solution.

The clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to noon today and Sunday at Surfer’s Point across from the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
