Santa Clarita Gets Site for Park, Library

Santa Clarita has been given 35 acres for a park and library in exchange for granting developers of a 281-unit housing project 10 years of immunity from future growth-control laws, city officials announced Tuesday.

The land near Whites Canyon Road and Nadal Street was dedicated this week to Santa Clarita by American Landmark Development and Weston Development Corp., said Rich Henderson, a principal planner for the city. The developers are building the single-family houses just east of the park and library site, Henderson said.

The developers have said they sought the agreement with the city in part because they were concerned about an April ballot measure that would allow only 475 new housing units in the city each year.

The developers also agreed to give the city about $300,000 for a bike trail along the Santa Clara River and $700,000 for the park.
