Long Beach : Developer Hopes for Lease to Open Showboat Theater

A proposal to dock a 19th-Century paddle-wheel showboat featuring Broadway-style musicals at the Catalina Landing in Long Beach could generate about $120,000 annually for the city and 150 new jobs, according to the developer.

Developer David Secter said he is working with community development officials to draft a 25-year lease agreement. Community development analyst Meredith Luther said the project is still being looked at, and no City Council vote is expected until after June, 1992.

Secter said he hopes to open the showboat, called Captain Banjo’s Jubilee, in 1993 with an 800-seat dinner theater and 200-seat bar and restaurant section. Dinner and show tickets would cost between $35 and $45, Secter said.
