The local chapter of the militant gay rights group Queer Nation went on hiatus after a stormy meeting and will reorganize under a new name and new leadership, it was reported Thursday.

A general meeting earlier this month ended in discord when the group could not agree on internal guidelines prohibiting racist, sexist, anti-Semitic and homophobic comments. Officially the group is taking a break until March 4, but it is expected to emerge as a new group called “Outrage,” the San Francisco Examiner reported.

“It was an incredible free-for-all” at the end, said member Alan Carson. “People, mostly women, began to feel alienated. Some people were grabbing all the opportunities and the spotlight, drowning out a more diverse array of voices.”

The new group will have more formal rules of participation, Carson said.
