1991 Updates : Civic Center Dispute Heads for the Courts

The City of Beverly Hills is taking its contractor to court, or is it the other way around?

In any case, the two sides are set for a trial in February, sources familiar with the case said.

At issue is a long-simmering dispute over the cost of new Civic Center, completed in 1990 at an estimated cost of $120 million.

The J.A. Jones Construction Co. said that it was paid just over $61 million for costs of almost $75 million for the final phase of the project, which includes a library, police headquarters and a set of outdoor courtyards.

The firm blamed the city for extensive delays and changes, but municipal attorneys have filed their own claim for $8 million, charging fraud, negligence and breach of contract on the part of the general contractor.
