Rast Among Finalists for NCAA Award

Cameron Rast, a former Royal High soccer standout, is among the finalists for the Today’s Top Six awards, presented annually by the NCAA.

In all, 12 athletes have been nominated for the awards, which will be announced Wednesday in Anaheim. Selection is based 50% on athletic ability, 25% on academic achievement and 25% on character, leadership and activities.

Rast, captain of the U.S. Olympic soccer team, is a two-time All-American and three-year captain at Santa Clara University.

He is among six candidates selected for consideration from fall sports. The others are Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer, Wisconsin Madison soccer player Heather Taggart, Washington State kicker Jason Hanson, Nebraska volleyball player Janet Kruse and Florida defensive tackle Brad Culpepper.

Rast, an accounting major, has a 2.97 grade-point average and has been a volunteer instructor at several Santa Clara youth soccer clinics.
