COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Witmer and Henjum Help SCC Reach Final of La Jolla Classic

Rick Witmer scored 26 points and Mike Henjum scored 21 to help the Southern California College men’s basketball team to an 86-67 victory over Willamette Friday in the first round of the La Jolla Classic at UC San Diego.

The Vanguards (11-1), who led, 42-21, at the half, will play UC San Diego (6-4), a 115-80 winner over Redlands, in the title game at 8 tonight.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 78, Southwestern (Kan.) 59--Doug Grove scored 17 points, D’Andre Brown had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Jason Vaughan added 12 points and 13 rebounds for host Christ College Irvine (6-8).

In the Grand Canyon women’s basketball tournament:

UC Davis 74, Chapman 70--Marvette Williams scored a game-high 19 points, but the Panthers (5-5) lost in the first round of the tournament. Tammie McQuain added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers

In the California Baptist women’s basketball tournament:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 65, Southern California College 44--The Mustangs outscored SCC, 12-0, in the final five minutes in a consolation semifinal.

Kristen Bevis led SCC (6-8) with 15 points.
