School Bus Hits Mud, Tips Over; No One Hurt

Share

Seven students and a bus driver avoided injury Monday morning when a school bus hit a patch of slippery mud and tipped over on a desolate stretch of road east of Gorman, authorities said.

Students clambered through emergency window exits unharmed and were taken by another bus to their classes at Del Sur School near Quartz Hill, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Ehly said.

Driver Martha Delores Johnson, 52, of Lancaster was examined at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center and released.

Johnson was driving around a curve on 300th Street West north of California 138 about 6:30 a.m. when the tires on the right side of the bus struck a patch of mud. Ehly said Johnson overcorrected and lost control of the 84-passenger bus, which belongs to the Antelope Valley Schools Transportation Agency.

The bus, which was traveling about 45 m.p.h., crossed the road and rolled onto its right side, Ehly said. No citations were issued.
