A young man armed with a pistol was shot and killed by police Monday afternoon as he stepped from a car where a sexual assault allegedly had occurred, authorities reported.

The man, whose name was not released by police, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead of gunshot wounds, said Police Lt. John Woods. Police estimated his age at 22.

Woods said two officers, whose names also were not disclosed, went to the A.R. Supermarket at 8281 Garden Grove Blvd. shortly before 1:30 p.m. after receiving calls about a possible rape or sexual assault inside a car parked in the market lot.

When they arrived, Woods said, both officers saw a woman flee the vehicle. According to authorities, the man then got out of the car with a gun in his hand and was shot by the officers.

Woods said he did not know how many shots were fired or any other significant details about the shooting.

But Richard Kim, the supermarket manager and a witness to the shooting, said it appeared that the young man was not cooperating with police. He said he saw the incident from the store’s front window and heard eight to 10 shots.

“He was moving back and forth, and then the shooting started,” Kim said. “While he was coming out of the car, I saw he showed some hesitation to their orders. They told him to get on the ground. He did not give himself up.”
