Hostesses’ Gala Raises $300,000

United Hostesses’ Charities’ gala Bal D’Hiver, held Nov. 9 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire, raised more than $300,000. Proceeds will go toward the organization’s $2-million pledge to fund a cardiac research floor in the Barbara and Marvin Davis Research Building under construction at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The ball was chaired by United Hostesses president Roni Heller and co-chaired by Merri Kaplan. Since its founding in 1942, the group has raised $7.5 million for Cedars-Sinai.

Hospice of Pasadena Inc. raised $28,000 at its “Light Up A Life” benefit, which began Dec. 6 in the Rotunda of Pasadena City Hall with a tree-lighting ceremony. Individuals and organizations made minimum donations of $15 per light in memory or in honor of loved ones whose names were inscribed in a book kept at the base of the tree. Since 1978, the hospice has assisted more than 2,200 patients with in-home supportive care. The program is totally supported by private donations.

Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts has announced receipt of a three-year matching grant totaling $75,000 from the James Irvine Foundation. The grant is to fund participation of young people from single-parent families and ethnically diverse backgrounds in Idyllwild’s Summer Arts Program.

Pepperdine University’s new Cultural Enrichment Initiative received a $1-million grant for the university’s decade-long, $5-million program to recruit and retain students from traditionally under-represented groups. The grant, announced Nov. 22, was a gift from National Medical Enterprises.

National Health Foundation on Dec. 20 announced receipt of a $10,000 grant from the Beer Institute Community Assistance Fund. The money will enhance projects aimed at preventing substance abuse among youth. Among the foundation’s projects is its “Lifestyle Choices” exhibit, an interactive display at the California Museum of Science and Industry using video and computer games.

Love Is Feeding Everyone (LIFE) raised $85,000 and received 2,600 pounds of food at its fourth annual “Country Christmas With Life.” The Dec. 7 country music gala was attended by 4,000 guests.
