A sheriff’s bomb squad removed a pipe bomb from the residence of a woman who had earlier been robbed Thursday in her Santee home, authorities said.

The woman summoned sheriff’s deputies about 11 a.m., saying that an armed man had robbed her of a ring and was still in her home in the 8500 block of Big Rock Road, officials said.

Timothy Dean III, 33, who gave the woman’s residence as his address, surrendered to authorities after lengthy negotiations over the phone with sheriff’s deputies, officials said. Dean was placed under arrest for robbery.

When they searched the woman’s home, deputies discovered what appeared to be a pipe bomb and called the bomb squad, officials said. Detective Bill Cruzen later removed a pipe bomb, five military explosives and gunpowder.

Sheriff’s deputies planned to hold Dean on suspicion of robbery, resisting arrest and possession of a destructive weapon.
