TENNIS ROUNDUP : Forget Upset by Sanchez in Sydney
Emilio Sanchez of Spain, playing nearly flawless tennis, upset defending champion Guy Forget of France, 6-3, 6-4, Saturday to win the men’s title at the New South Wales Open at Sydney, Australia.
The 26-year-old Sanchez, ranked 15th in the world, did not drop a set in five matches in cruising to his 15th career singles title. He won $33,800.
Top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini killed the chances of a family singles sweep by dominating Sanchez’s sister, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, 6-1, 6-1, in the women’s final today.
Sabatini showed why she is ranked third in the world, winning her fifth match in straight sets while losing only 17 games.
Unseeded Jaime Yzaga of Peru overcame gusting winds and MaliVai Washington to win the New Zealand Open at Auckland.
Yzaga, playing his first ATP Tour event since the U.S. Open, defeated Washington, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, in a 1-hour, 51-minute baseline struggle.
Jim Courier, the French Open champion, completed his tuneup for the Australian Open by defeating Michael Chang, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, in the final of a round-robin tournament at Adelaide, Australia.
The victory gave Courier the $120,000 winner-take-all prize in the six-man exhibition.
