I-5 Collision Kills 1, Hurts 4 Near Border
A 35-year-old Tijuana woman was killed and four other people, including two children, were hurt Sunday in a two-car crash on Interstate 5 near the Mexican border that delayed border-bound traffic for hours, the California Highway Patrol said.
Albina Aguayo Rodriguez was driving south in the lane nearest the center divider, on a stretch of the road near the interchange with Interstate 805, when her car collided at 3 p.m. with one driven by Lawrence Krugman, 49, of Alta Loma, officers said.
Krugman was headed north--on the patch of pavement between the divider and the southbound freeway--when his car hit the divider, veered into traffic and collided with the Rodriguez car, officers said. Her car, with four passengers, rolled several times. His spun to a stop on the far shoulder, officers said.
Krugman, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and taken to County Jail in downtown San Diego, officers said.
Rodriguez was pronounced dead at 3:59 p.m. at UC San Diego Medical Center, said investigators with the county medical examiner’s office.
Ricardo Sanchez Aguayo, 11, and Lorena Sanchez Aguayo, 7, both of Tijuana, were admitted to Children’s Hospital. She was in good condition late Sunday with facial cuts. He was in serious condition with a broken left leg and possible head injuries, hospital spokesman Mark Morelli said.
Hilda Sanchez, 39, of Tijuana was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for a broken elbow, a nursing supervisor said.
Fermin Rosas, 37, of Tijuana, who suffered facial cuts, was treated and released from Chula Vista Community Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.
