IRVINE : Sunken Lane Snarls Santa Ana Freeway

Share

Emergency repairs snarled the southbound Santa Ana Freeway between Sand Canyon Road and Irvine Boulevard on Friday after the far right lane sank several inches, Caltrans officials said.

Engineer Mike Grotke said workers on Thursday night removed temporary steel shoring beams that have been in place for more than a year for the freeway widening project, causing the lane to settle 6 inches.

State Department of Transportation crews closed two lanes from 7:45 to 10 a.m. to patch the depression with asphalt, slowing traffic through the area. Grotke said the depression will be resurfaced by April, when construction on that portion of the freeway is completed.
