SMALL FACES: If you want a clue as to the difference between Rolling Stone and its upstart rival Spin magazine, Spin named “Bandwagonesque,” the U.S. debut from Scotland’s Teenage Fanclub, the best album of last year. Now Rolling Stone has just trashed the record with a 1 1/2-star review. . . . March 17 is a looking like a good day for female musicians: The latest albums from Michelle Shocked, Melissa Etheridge and rockers L7 are all due in stores that day. Shocked’s “Arkansas Traveler” was recorded at stops around the world, with Hothouse Flowers and Clarence (Gatemouth) Brown among the many who sat in on the sessions. Etheridge’s third album, “Never Enough,” includes a surprisingly funky song titled “2001.” And L7’s Slash Records debut, produced by Nirvana producer Butch Vig, carries the weighty title “Bricks Are Heavy.”
