Baby Boomers Are Losing Out as Home Owners, Study Shows

Share

Baby boomers have lost more ground than other population segments in terms of home ownership, according to some new findings related to the 1990 U.S. Census.

“Retreat from Home Ownership: A Comparison of the Generations and the States,” a USC study of newly available data, found that home ownership among 25- to 44-year-olds plunged about 6% during the past decade, and baby boomers fared worst in North Dakota and best in New York.

Issued by USC’s Lusk Center for Real Estate Development, the study was based on the Census report that the percentage of U.S. residents who own their homes fell in 1990 for the first time since the Depression.

The USC study revealed, however, that among householders age 65 and older, home-ownership rates rose 5% nationwide.
