California IN BRIEF : SAN PABLO : Dog Killed After Mauling Owners

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A Rottweiler dog turned on its owners, mauling a 6-year-old girl’s face and locking its jaws onto a woman’s leg for five minutes until police ended the ordeal by shooting the animal to death. A close-range fire extinguisher blast at the dog’s face failed to budge it, as did a police baton wedged under the dog’s collar. “Five minutes with a dog latched onto your leg seems like forever,” Officer Ken Bays said of the attack. When all else failed, Officer Mike Kendall shot the dog in the side. But that only made the dog grip the woman’s leg tighter, so he killed the dog with a shot to the head, Bays said. The girl was in fair condition at an Oakland hospital after undergoing surgery to repair head, face and neck wounds, a hospital official said. Her mother was in good condition at another hospital after undergoing leg surgery.
