COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Tennessee Upsets Kentucky, 107-85

There’s something about Knoxville that brings out the worst in Kentucky. The No. 8 Wildcats lost there for the 16th time in their last 21 visits when Tennessee upset them, 107-85, in a Southeastern Conference game Tuesday night.

Allan Houston scored 36 points and Carlus Groves added 23 for the Volunteers (10-6, 3-2).

Jamal Mashburn led Kentucky (14-3, 4-1) with 28 points before fouling out with 3 1/2 minutes remaining.

No. 4 Indiana 89, No. 16 Michigan 74--Once a fabulous freshman himself, Damon Bailey showed Michigan’s five rookies that getting older means getting better.

Bailey, the Big Ten freshman of the year in 1991, scored 22 points and keyed a decisive 10-0 second-half run at Bloomington, Ind.

The victory was Indiana’s 12th in a row and gave the Hoosiers (14-2) a 5-0 Big Ten record.

Bailey converted eight of 10 free throws, grabbed five rebounds and tied teammate Chris Reynolds with five assists.

Calbert Cheaney, who also scored 22 points, made eight of 11 free throws as the Hoosiers went to the line 50 times, an Assembly Hall record.

Michigan is 10-4, 2-3.

No. 1 Duke 95, Boston University 85--Christian Laettner scored 25 points to lead the Blue Devils at Boston.

Trailing 85-61 with 7:45 left, the Terriers (5-8) went on a 24-9 run capped by Mark Daly’s three-point basket, but there were only 19 seconds left and they ran out of time.

Duke (13-0) made 36 of 56 foul shots. The 6-foot-11 Laettner made 15 of 20, including all 10 in the first half.

Villanova 70, No. 20 Syracuse 60--Chris Walker scored 17 points at Philadelphia as the Wildcats (7-7, 5-1) took over first place in the Big East.

The Orangemen (13-2, 5-2) scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 33-24 lead, but Villanova ran off 10 points in a row to regain the lead.

No. 19 North Carolina Charlotte 82, Davidson 70--Henry Williams scored 21 points to lead the 49ers (12-2) at Charlotte.

James Terrell added 19 points for Charlotte, which never trailed but struggled with offensive inconsistency throughout.

The Wildcats (5-8) turned the ball over 11 times in the first half and fell behind, 26-9.

No. 21 Tulane 87, Virginia Commonwealth 85--Freshman guard Pointer Williams scored seven of his 14 points in overtime as the Green Wave (14-1, 3-0) survived a Metro Conference scare from the Rams (9-6, 2-2) at Richmond, Va. Williams made five of six free throws in the final 31 seconds of overtime period.

OTHER GAMES

Elmer Bennett scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half and Notre Dame overcame an 18-point halftime deficit to beat Marquette, 69-63, at Milwaukee. . . . Nelson Haggerty and Joe Blasingim made free throws in the final 24 seconds to carry Baylor to a 64-63 victory over Texas Christian in a Southwest Conference game at Ft. Worth. . . . Gerrod Abram scored as the buzzer sounded to give Boston College a 51-50 Big East victory over Miami at Miami. It was the third consecutive time Abram had scored the winning basket for the Eagles. . . . Darin Archbold scored 24 points, and J.P. Brens came off the bench to get seven of his 15 in the final 4:53 as Butler defeated Penn State, 79-74, at Indianapolis.
