You Call This Healthy?

The “Best Recipes of ‘91” (Dec. 26) is a most remarkable article. It noted that the staff was particularly gratified, even surprised, at how many of the dishes were not only delicious but also healthy.

Which are the healthy dishes? Surely not the chocolate-pecan cake, caramel corn or peach pie.

That leaves seven recipes, all very high in fat content and most very high in cholesterol. In fact, of the 10 recipes given, only a single one had less than a third of its calories from fat--and that was the peach pie.

I believe the medical profession now considers it unhealthy for more than one-third of the total calories to be from fat.

The Border Grill’s torta is a sandwich with practically 1,000 calories per serving. That torta, as well as the albondigas, the Georgian cheese bread and the calamari stew are all saturated with fat and salt and loaded with cholesterol.

Why pretend these are healthy foods? Why not simply acknowledge that they are scrumptious and are to be eaten at one’s own risk? It would have been more honest, if less politically correct.
