Here’s another dessert you can sink your teeth into without worrying about excess calories, fat and cholesterol. Naturally sweet apples and a low-calorie crust made with only four paper-thin sheets of filo dough keep the fat counts low.

LIGHT-STYLE TARTE TATIN

Juice of 1 lemon

10 Granny Smith apples

1/4 cup sugar

2 to 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1/4 teaspoon ground mace

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon low-calorie orange marmalade

1/4 cup low-calorie unsalted margarine, melted

4 (13x9-inch) sheets filo dough

Additional ground cinnamon, nutmeg or powdered sugar

Pour lemon juice into large bowl. Peel, core and chop apples into large chunks. Place in bowl and stir to coat with lemon juice. Sprinkle with sugar (depending on sweetness of apples), cinnamon, allspice, cloves, mace, nutmeg, marmalade and 2 tablespoons melted margarine. Mix until apples are well coated.

Lightly brush 13x9-inch baking pan with margarine. Place 2 sheets filo dough in baking pan and lightly brush with margarine. Spread apple filling evenly over filo dough in pan. Top with remaining 2 sheets filo dough. Brush lightly with remaining margarine. Trim edges to fit pan if too large.

Bake at 350 degrees until light golden brown, about 30 to 35 minutes. Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon, as desired. Cut into 12 pieces with serrated-edged knife. Makes 12 servings.

Note: Filo dough will become soggy when cool. Reheat dessert in oven to restore crisp texture.
