SIMI VALLEY : Roofer-Caused Fire Damages 2 Condos

Share

Workers making repairs to the roof of a Simi Valley condominium complex Tuesday accidentally started a fire that caused more than $90,000 damage to two units.

No one was injured in the blaze, which was reported about 3 p.m. at the complex in the 3000 block of Lockwood Court, said Ron Taylor, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

“Only one woman was home at the time and she managed to get out,” Taylor said.

Two employees of the Tujunga-based Dutch Roofing Co. were using a blowtorch in their repair work when they accidentally ignited some wood shingles, Taylor said.

It took about 50 firefighters 40 minutes to extinguish the fire, he said. Structural damage to the two condominium units was estimated at $80,500, while loss of contents totaled about $11,100, fire officials said.

Mike Myers, a volunteer with the local Chapter of the American Red Cross, said the emergency services organization would provide motel and food vouchers to residents displaced by the fire.
