The New Jersey Devils didn’t forget.

Friday night at Detroit, they turned the tables on the Red Wings’ All-Star goaltender, Tim Cheveldae.

They scored five goals in 25 minutes to send Cheveldae out of the nets and went on to beat the Red Wings, leaders of the Norris Division, 6-3.

A week ago, Cheveldae had stopped 21 shots in 60 minutes during a 7-0 victory over the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

New Jersey’s Tom McVie said he felt the 7-0 loss was more of an anomaly than the 6-3 victory.

“I was just furious after that last game,” he said. “Detroit played well, but we just didn’t get our job done. But we’ve settled down, and we got a big win in Montreal.”

Cheveldae’s mastery ended 4:36 into this game when New Jersey’s Scott Stevens scored on a pass from Peter Stastny. The Devils kept it going in the second period, scoring three goals in less than four minutes.

It was the Devils’ fourth victory in a row on the road. With an 8-2-1 record in the last 11 games, they moved into third place in the Patrick Division.

Detroit’s Steve Yzerman had two goals, giving him five in the last two games.

Buffalo 5, Montreal 3--The Canadiens had a 3-1 lead after the first 16 minutes at Buffalo, but the Sabres surged back to stretch their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1).

Randy Wood scored the tie-breaking goal seven minutes into the third period on a slapshot in close. Donald Audette, leading rookie scorer in the league, tied it for the Sabres three minutes earlier with his 24th goal.

Quebec 4, Winnipeg 4--Adam Foote scored his second goal of the season with 4:09 left at Winnipeg to cap the Nordiques’ rally.

Quebec, winless in 24 road games this season, overcame a three-goal deficit in the last eight minutes. Mike Hough scored goals 2 1/2 minutes apart off goaltender Bob Essensa to give Foote the chance to tie. On the road, the Nordiques are 0-19-5.

Edmonton 4, Hartford 1--Joe Murphy and Vincent Damphousse scored first-period goals at Edmonton and the Oilers went on to score an easy victory over the Whalers. Their 20th victory in 53 games enabled the Oilers to pull to within two points of the Kings and Calgary, who are tied for third place in the Smythe Division.
