COUNTYWIDE : Controlled Burns Prompt Phone Calls

Share

Controlled burns prompted phone calls to county fire officials Saturday, a dispatcher said.

The Ventura County Fire Department had received “a lot of calls” about the controlled burns, dispatcher Annie Ironside said, but she could not estimate the number.

She said there were 51 controlled burns under way Saturday. The largest involved 450 tons of lemon trees on Telegraph Road between Victoria Avenue and Kimball Road.

Ironside said people must apply in advance to the Fire Department for an agricultural burn permit.

The permits can only be used on burn days, which are declared by the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District.

After the permit is granted, the applicant must check with the district each afternoon to see if the following day has been declared a burn day.

To be approved by the Fire Department, the burns must be agricultural and outside residential areas, Ironside said.
