Police arrested a 22-year-old murder suspect at a convenience store in the Poway area, one week after the he allegedly gunned down a 49-year-old computer programmer.

After a short foot chase, Jemal Bernard, an unemployed Poway resident, was arrested about 2 p.m. Friday by San Diego County sheriff’s detectives and San Diego and Poway police, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Linda Fulton.

Bernard was booked in connection with the shooting death of James Edward Brue of Poway, whose family reported him missing Jan. 24.

Brue’s body was found Jan. 26 near Green Valley Truck Trail. He had been shot twice with a pistol that police recovered in his car nearby, Fulton said.

Detectives learned that a witness saw Bernard walking away from the car and that Bernard had a longstanding dispute with Brue, Fulton said. A tip Friday led police to a convenience store near Interstate 15 and Rancho Penasquitos Road, where Bernard was arrested, Fulton said. Bernard is being held in County Jail downtown.
