Man Drowns on Fishing Excursion

A man on a family fishing excursion was swept off the rocks at Rancho Palos Verdes on Saturday and drowned as five relatives looked on in horror.

Dead is George Robinson, 57, of Los Angeles.

“We were down there fishing and the water just came and knocked us all,” said Robinson’s son, Althea, crying near the spot where his father had disappeared. “I looked up and there was my father in the water, caught in the surge, hollering for help. He was right in front of me and I couldn’t get out there to do anything for him.”

The tragedy occurred at Smugglers’ Cove, a popular fishing spot across the street from the Wayfarer’s Chapel on Pacific Coast Highway. Robinson had arrived there about noon for a day of fishing with his two grown sons, two young grandsons and another relative.
