ROUNDUP : Sea Cadet Adds to McAnally’s Big Day

Not long after Ron McAnally learned he had won the Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer for 1991, his Sea Cadet won the $500,000 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

Bouncing back after failing as the 2-5 favorite in the William P. Kyne Handicap last month at Bay Meadows, the 4-year-old Bolger colt and Alex Solis sat off the pace set by Sunny Sunrise, got the lead into the stretch and drew away to win by three lengths. Sea Cadet covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48 in the first race in the American Championship Racing Series and paid $7 as the 5-2 second choice.

Out Of Place, a 36-1 shot, was second, a neck in front of Sunny Sunrise. Strike The Gold, the 13-10 favorite, finished sixth and has lost nine in a row since his Kentucky Derby victory last year.

“I just sat on him and stayed inside coming to the 4 1/2 (furlong) pole,” said Solis. “At the 5/16ths, I moved on him a little and when we hit the quarter pole, I asked him and he responded. He was looking around in the stretch, waiting for competition.”

Trainer Eyal Klayman completed the best six days of his career when Looie Capote defeated Icy Eyes and five other 3-year-old fillies in the $106,450 Santa Ynez Breeders’ Cup Stakes Saturday at Santa Anita.

A week ago today, Klayman took the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes with Irish Twist, a horse he claimed for $50,000.

Third in the Santa Ysabel Stakes 10 days earlier, Looie Capote, the 3-1 third choice, battled with Peaceful Road early, then repelled a challenge by 5-2 second choice Icy Eyes and was coming away at the finish under Kent Desormeaux. The final margin was 1 1/4 lengths and the time for the seven furlongs was 1:23 2/5.

Soviet Sojourn, the 13-10 favorite, was third, then came Arking, Galore’s Magic, Peaceful Road and Wicked Wit.
