Jaclyn Smith, Actress?

Sorry, despite the admirable defense of Aaron Spelling (“Rosenberg Out of Step With Critics,” Jan. 20) and Randy Stone (“TV Star Smith Is Wrongly Assailed”), I must agree with Howard Rosenberg’s assessment of Jaclyn Smith’s career to date.
If I read the same article they are referring to, he did not assail her character, intelligence, professionalism or citizenship. He addressed himself solely to her television performances and, if anything, was being kind in calling her work “cool and composed.”
Actually, Smith is not so much a bad actress as a non-actress. No emotion is allowed to disturb the surface of that lovely face. Even her speaking voice registers no timbre.
It must be God’s way of being fair--He bequeaths heart-stopping beauty to Jaclyn Smith and Brooke Shields and genuine dramatic talent to Sally Field and Patty Duke. But, not to worry, of the two gifts, I believe most women would consider the former by far the greater blessing.
