HUNTINGTON BEACH : Utility Gives $20,000 to City Art Center
Southern California Edison recently donated $20,000 to the Huntington Beach Art Center, due to open next year.
Edison, which formerly owned the Main Street office that will be refurbished as the city’s first art center, is donating cash along with a plan to help the facility cut its energy bills. The plan will reduce the art center’s energy costs by one-third, said Gerald Chapman, vice chairman of the Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation.
The city bought the 11,000-square-foot building in 1988 to be converted into an art center. Officials had hoped to have the facility completed by now, but fund-raising problems have slowed planning.
The art center foundation is still seeking additional donations to cover the $750,000 cost of the building renovation. Groundbreaking on the refurbishment is expected in March, said Michael Mudd, the city’s cultural services director.
When completed, the art center will present exhibits, lectures, workshops, film and video programs and other events. It will include three galleries, a studio, a bookstore and other amenities.
