A Burbank teen-ager was in critical condition with head injuries Sunday after he was struck by a pickup truck in what appeared to be a deliberate act, police said.

No one had been arrested in the Saturday night incident, which Burbank police are treating as an attempted murder.

“Statements from witnesses indicate . . . it was done intentionally,” Detective David Gabriel said.

The 17-year-old victim, who was not identified, was traveling with friends near Chandler Boulevard and Buena Vista Street about 11:30 p.m. when they noticed a pickup truck with at least two males inside following them, Gabriel said.

The first vehicle eventually pulled into an alley next to a Thrifty Drug store at 3618 W. Magnolia Blvd., and the youth and his friends got out, Gabriel said. Within seconds, “the driver of the following truck gunned his engine, drove forward, hit the victim and kept going,” he said.

The 17-year-old’s friends took him to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.

Police do not have a motive, Gabriel said.
