A 40-year-old man was beaten to death by two men in a possible robbery attempt Sunday night, police said.

The man, a naval commissary worker whose name has not been released pending notification of kin, was walking west in the 4500 block of University Avenue about 7:15 p.m. when two young men behind him quickly walked past him and abruptly turned around, San Diego Police Lt. Paul Ybarrondo said.

According to witnesses, one of the men, described as wearing a dark jacket with red trim, struck the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the curb, Ybarrondo said. The attackers hit the victim several more times before walking away, Ybarrondo said.

Paramedics who arrived minutes later tried to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Ybarrondo said.

No money was taken from the victim, Ybarrondo said.

Police are still searching for the assailants, described as 16 to 19 years old. One wore his hair braided, Ybarrondo said.
