COUNTYWIDE : Hearing Scheduled on Pipeline Proposal

Share

The California Public Utilities Commission has scheduled a public hearing Wednesday in Ventura on a request to build a 170-mile oil pipeline linking offshore platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel to Los Angeles-area refineries.

The $200-million conduit would carry up to 130,000 barrels of crude a day through the heart of Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

The pipeline is being proposed by Pacific Pipeline System Inc., a sister company of Southern Pacific Railroad. It would run from Gaviota in Santa Barbara County to Ventura, inland to Santa Clarita, and then south through Burbank and Los Angeles.

The Coalition Against the Pipeline, a citizens group that played a pivotal role in drumming up opposition to a similar project five years ago, is still studying this project and has yet to take a stand on it. But some of the group’s members worry that an earthquake could rupture the pipeline.

The meeting in Ventura is part of a series of five public hearings in California on the project. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the County Government Center in the Assembly Room in the Ventura Lower Plaza.
