La Verne : Theater Project to Begin

Share

After a long delay caused by a lawsuit, grading is scheduled to begin this week on the Edwards Theater complex in La Verne, City Manager Martin R. Lomeli said.

Lomeli told the City Council on Monday that the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 27 and that the theater should be completed by early September.

In addition, he said negotiations on a lease agreement between Edwards Theaters Circuit Inc. and the Olive Garden restaurant are nearly concluded. If the agreement is completed soon, he said, the restaurant may be completed at the same time as the theater.

Negotiations for a second restaurant have opened with a Northern California Mexican restaurant chain called Chevy’s, he said.

La Verne pharmacist Bob Mastrow, who considered the theaters too large, sued the city and Edwards Theaters, contending that the environmental report for the project was inadequate.

In December, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge rejected that contention, clearing the way for construction to begin.
