Norwalk City Councilman Robert E. White, who has been hospitalized since suffering a stroke in December, announced that he will not seek reelection in April. White, 72, continues to undergo physical therapy at a local extended care facility.

In an open letter announcing his decision, White said: “It is with a very heavy heart that I must announce to you that it is impossible for me to seek reelection at the time due to health reasons. . . . I’m a fighter, and I’ll continue to fight to get well and be among you soon.”

White’s council seat is one of two that will be filled in the April 14 election.

Mayor Mike Mendez said he will seek reelection, and so far, three other candidates have entered the race.

A lifelong Norwalk resident, White has served on the council for 24 years. He was first elected in 1968 and held the largely ceremonial post of mayor five times.

Among his accomplishments, White helped to establish the Rio Hondo Temporary Home, a homeless shelter on the grounds of Metropolitan State Hospital. He has also served as a member of the California Department of Transportation Advisory Committee.

“He served on every city commission there is,” said Rosemary Shannon, acting city clerk.

In recent years, White often was at odds with other council members.

“He is very opinionated, but each of us have our own opinions and we don’t always have to agree,” Mendez said. “It’s awful that he’s had to pull out because of illness. He’s been a big contributor to the community.”
