Cycling, Climbing Festival

The 1992 Kashi Bicycling and Adventure Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the O’Brien Pavillion at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The ninth annual festival features more than 75 booths, varied bicycling events and the California Indoor Climbing Championships. More than 250 of the top climbers in North America are expected to compete on a 35-foot-high climbing wall.

Stacy Allison, the first American woman to climb Mt. Everest; Ned Overend, the 1990 World Mountain Bike Champion, and John Howard, Olympian and Ironman winner, are among those expected to participate in the festival. In conjunction with the event will be the third annual charity Festival Fun Ride & Tandem Rally, which features four scenic cycling tours through Rancho Santa Fe. The four routes offer distances of 7.5, 25, 45 and 65 miles.

Bike ride registration begins at 6 a.m. Sunday at Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club, one mile east of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. All rides start and finish at the polo club. The 65-mile ride begins at 7 a.m., the 45-mile ride begins at 7:45 a.m., the 25-mile ride at 8:30 a.m. and the 7.5-mile ride begins at 9:15 a.m.

This year, a tandem category has been added, with preferred starting positions for each ride. The first 100 tandem riders who register will receive a Burley water bottle.

Entry fee is $28. Riders will receive a T-shirt and a free ticket to the festival at the fairgrounds. Proceeds will benefit the San Diego Service Center for the Blind.

The festival at the fairgrounds features products by manufacturers, distributors and retailers of bicycling and health-related products.

Eagle Creek Adventure Travel Pavillion will host an additional 35 booths by adventure travel outfitters and equipment manufacturers.

Festival tickets, available at the door, are $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12. Vons Club Card holders get $1 off admission price.
